Tottenham are not interested in signing Man United star Marcus Rashford in January, says Ange Postecoglou
Marcus Rashford dropped a bombshell earlier this week, claiming he is ready for a new challenge away from Manchester United.
The Manchester United star told The Times journalist Henry Winter that he’s thinking of the “next steps” in his career. The 27-year-old has endured a difficult last 18 months at Old Trafford, failing to kick on since bagging 30 goals in all competitions during the 2022/23 season.
He has just eight Premier League goals to his name in 2024 and was left out of the squad by new head coach Ruben Amorim for the Manchester derby. Marcus Rashford’s comments come in the wake of speculation linking him with a move away from Man United.
Due to his eye-watering wages, the England international’s potential destinations could be handful, but the Saudi Pro League appears to be an option and they would certainly want to bring another global superstar on board after signing the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Riyad Mahrez among some in the last couple of years.
Paris Saint-Germain have been looking at Rashford for some time now, while he was linked with Arsenal in the past summer transfer window. Tottenham may have not been subject to concrete links with the Man United forward recently, but should they decide to go for a new attacker in the January market, there is a great option out there.
Ahead of Spurs’ Carabao Cup quarter-final tie with Man United, Ange Postecoglou was asked about whether he would like to sign Rashford next year. However, the Tottenham boss played down the prospects of a January move for the wantaway Red Devils’ attacker.
“Ah, mate if I looked at everyone we were linked to, I would have no time to do anything else to be honest. I have got other people to do that part of the process. For us, we’ve been pretty disciplined in what we’re trying to build here and we’ll continue to be so,” Ange Postecoglou told Football London.
“That’s a not on my radar. You can ask me about Marcus but you can ask me about every single Premier League footballer and I’ll say the same thing.”
here would be a school of thought that Spurs could do well with a player of Rashford’s calibre and experience, particularly with Son Heung-min’s powers declining and Timo Werner’s loan deal unlikely to be turned permanent at the end of the season.
At a club like Spurs, the Englishman would unquestionably want to become the highest earner. Plus, his asking fee would surely surpass the club-record £65million spent on Dominic Solanke. This would largely eat into the club’s supposed budget in January.
Tottenham would be changing their wage structure if they signed Rashford from Man United, and it may not be worth it for a player who still thinks he isn’t into his “peak years as a footballer”. Chairman Daniel Levy would be reluctant to blow open the club’s wage structure in order to sign the Wythenshawe-born talent.
Going by Big Ange’s comments and if all factors are considered plausibly, we don’t see a move for Rashford happening in January.
