‘Nasty’ – Newcastle United star ruled out v Ipswich Town as Eddie Howe faces £135m rethink.
Newcastle United’s Joelinton needed sutures after being struck by Brentford defender Nathan Collins last night.
When Joelinton fell to the ground midway through the first half, Collins elbowed him in the face before grabbing him with his studs. Referee Sam Barrott did not discipline Joelinton for the incident, so he attempted to take matters into his own hands by fiercely attacking Collins.
Only after that did anyone inside St James’ Park see his wounds. The 28-year-old suffered a serious cut on his right ear and, despite his best efforts, was replaced at halftime.
Newcastle led 2-0 at this point, with Sandro Tonali scoring twice and Fabian Schar adding a third. Yoane Wissa equalized for the visitors in stoppage time.
Joelinton did not appear in the full-time dressing room photo since he was undergoing medical treatment.
The former club-record acquisition will miss Saturday’s Premier League match against Ipswich Town due to a suspension for five yellow cards this season, rather than an injury.
“I’m disappointed to lose him because he’s the type of player we need in every away game,” Howe added. “He’s such a wholehearted player so at least he can play free and play his normal game.”
Joelinton’s absence will require Howe to rotate his three-man midfield.Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali are certain to start at Portman Road, but Howe must choose from Joe Willock, Sean Longstaff, and Lewis Miley.
