I struggled at Leicester City in the Championship, now I’m the Europa League’s joint-top scorer.
Leicester City has seen the highs and lows of the transfer market, with one player now demonstrating his abilities after failing at the King Power Stadium.
The group that helped Leicester win the Championship title featured many heroes, and they played some fantastic football under Enzo Maresca. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, an academy graduate who left for Chelsea in the summer, was an unstoppable force in midfield, while Jamie Vardy regained his scoring touch. Several new acquisitions impressed after coming in 2023, most notably custodian Mads Hermansen, who is now thriving as a Premier League shot-stopper. While many players shone on their road to promotion, one loan signing failed to have the effect Maresca had hoped for.
Yunus Akgun struggled on loan with Leicester City in the Championship.
Leicester signed Turkish offensive midfielder Yunus Akgun on loan from Galatasaray in the summer of 2023. The 14-cap international arrived as a versatile forward who thrived in the Turkish Super Lig as a winger or attacking midfielder. Unfortunately, the 24-year-old struggled for regular playing time at the King Power Stadium, as Maresca preferred Abdul Fatawu and Stephy Mavididi on the flanks, with Dewsbury-Hall as an advanced playmaker. Maresca also stated that Akgun suffered physically in the Championship, and urged him to conform to the demands of English football. “Yunus is having trouble with the rhythm, most likely because he mentioned that the rhythm in Turkey is a little slow. “The game’s pace is faster here.” the Italian said.
“He is struggling. He’s had a muscle problem, now it’s better. I like Yunus, I would like to give him more minutes, but he needs to adjust and understand how English football is, that it’s more physical.”
Maresca wanted more from the Turkish international in the second half of the season but he ultimately didn’t improve, with Akgun only starting nine times in the Championship.
