Danny Rohl latest: Compensation package Sheffield Wednesday’s only weapon as they fight to keep manager amid Southampton interest

In the face of Premier League interest, Sheffield Wednesday will have to struggle to retain manager Danny Rohl.

Southampton is considering whether to pay the Owls the amount they will demand in order to sign a highly regarded

35-year-old who has previously worked for the team, who made a stunning comeback from relegation the previous
season, and who has the Championship experience to oversee a rebuild should that prove too difficult for him, as
many analysts predict.

The fact that Rohl signed a new three-year contract in the summer, with rumours of a lowered release clause at the

time, is probably Wednesday’s sole significant negotiating chip.

He will, however, be in a far better position in that regard at St Mary’s because Premier League money is guaranteed

for the upcoming season, even if they are demoted, thanks to parachute payments.

After leading the Owls to a spectacular escape from relegation, Rohl played hard to get at the end of the previous

season, at least in public. However, his bond with the supporters was evident, and he quickly signed a new deal.

His tactical expertise was further enhanced by a period as a commentator for ITV’s coverage of the 2024 European

Championship, and it’s remarkable how well-regarded he is by even S6 players he has benched.

Rohl improved his reputation, which had landed him positions on the coaching staffs of Germany and Bayern

Munich, by leading Wednesday to 51 points and safety after they finished last in the Championship with three points from 13 games.

Prior to that, Rohl worked as Ralph Hasenhuttl’s assistant at Southampton from December 2018 to August 2019.

After firing Pep Ljinders, Jurgen Klopp’s former assistant, on Monday, RB Leipzig, another team Rohl coached, also has a managerial opening.
