An official announcement from Southampton FC’s management
We can confirm that we made the difficult decision to fire Russell Martin, the manager of the Men’s First Team.
We were all aware of the hardships we would face this season as we adjusted to life in the top division and competed in the world’s most prestigious and demanding league.
But the truth about our condition is clear. The board has been open and honest about our expectations and has supported Russell and his staff. We have all agreed on the critical need for improvement.
We’d want to take this opportunity to thank Russell and his crew for their 18 months of tremendous work and dedication to the club, both on and off the pitch. All Southampton FC fans will remember their memories of the previous season, notably their victory in the May Play-Off Final.
Until a permanent replacement is announced, Simon Rusk, the current Under-21s manager, will act as interim manager.
The continued development of talent flowing through our Academy gives us hope behind the scenes. We are thrilled with the contributions our young players are making, and we are confident that everyone involved with the club will continue to find strength and pride in them.
We are also extremely grateful for our fans’ unwavering encouragement and support. especially though the results have not been what we all wanted, your understanding and passion continue to inspire our long-term loyalty to the club, especially as we experience firsthand the enormous disparities between the Championship and the Premier League.
