A statement from the board of Southampton FC
We can certify that we have made the tough choice to fire Russell Martin, our manager of the Men’s First Team.
We were all aware of the difficulties we would have this season as we readapted to life in the top division and played in the world’s greatest and most competitive league.
But the truth about our predicament is evident. The board has been clear and honest about our expectations and has backed Russell and his team. In acknowledging the pressing need for improvement, we have all been in agreement.
We want to use this opportunity to express our gratitude to Russell and his team for their 18 months of tireless labour and commitment to the club, both on and off the pitch. All Southampton FC supporters will always cherish the wonderful memories of the previous campaign, particularly the victory in the May Play-Off Final.
Until a permanent replacement is announced, Simon Rusk, the current Under-21s manager, will serve as the team’s interim manager.
The ongoing growth of talent passing through our Academy gives us encouragement behind the scenes. We are pleased with the contributions our young players are making and are sure that everyone connected to the club will continue to find strength and pride in them.
We are also incredibly appreciative of our fans’ unwavering encouragement and support. especially though the results have not been what we all wanted, your understanding and passion continue to fuel our long-term dedication to the club, especially as we observe firsthand the stark differences between the Championship and the Premier League.
