Southampton’s search for a replacement for Russell Martin has seen them end up looking in the Championship.
According to reports, West Brom manager Carlos Corberan is a ‘strong contender’ for Southampton’s vacant manager position.
According to Football Insider, the Spaniard has emerged as the new frontrunner for the St Mary’s Stadium position following boardroom negotiations. Football Insider claims Corberan is ‘eager to go’ the Baggies, but he has always stressed his allegiance to West Brom when linked with other opportunities.
Earlier this month, he was connected with a job at West Midlands rivals Wolves, and the Leicester City position became vacant again. Corberan told the Express and Star: “I can only express how dedicated I am at West Bromwich, and how proud I am to be the coach of this incredible club.
“I appreciate that there is always rumor in football, but I had no idea Leicester’s coach was fired until yesterday night (Monday). There is so much speculation that may appear beyond my control.”
The 41-year-old’s contract with the Hawthorns runs until the summer of 2027, following a contract extension signed in February 2023. Southampton intend to make a quick appointment after removing Russell Martin, and they want to bring someone in before their next game, which is against Fulham on Sunday, December 22.
Southampton are at the bottom of the league, with only five points this season. A demanding period lies, similar to that of the Championship, with games against West Ham and Crystal Palace scheduled for Christmas. West Brom have a trip to Derby County on Boxing Day, as well as an away meeting against Sheffield United, before beginning the New Year at home against Preston North End.
Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl emerged as the early choice, but Sky Sports reports that no formal approach has been made. According to Ben Jacobs, Senior Football Correspondent for Give Me Sport, Rohl was considered, but a transaction is complicated by compensation, and they are unlikely to proceed with the move.
Carlos Corberan’s contract apparently has a buyout clause worth around £4 million. Previous sources stated that the release clause was roughly £2 million, but it is likely to be far greater.
