Sky Sports Sunderland duo edge closer to January exit as Régis Le Bris explains Swansea City bench decision.

Sunderland are set to sanction several exits for their periphery players in the January window. Abdoullah Ba and Jewison Bennette appear to have moved a step closer to a January departure from Sunderland after Régis Le Bris chose not to include them in the matchday squad at Swansea City. Sunderland’s wide options were handicapped even further this week as Tommy Watson suffered an ankle and knee injury that is expected to keep him out for two months. Le Bris chose to transfer Eliezer Mayenda to the left wing, a decision he has intimated he will stick with over the holiday season.

Despite routinely playing for the U21s in recent months, Ba and Bennette did not go, with Le Bris instead choosing teenage midfielder Harrison Jones to the bench. Zak Johnson, a young defender, was an additional member of the travelling party. After the game, Le Bris explained that his decision was simply tactical and maintained that Adil Aouchiche, who assisted against Bristol City in midweek, is the next in line for the job. “I believe Eli needs time in this role, as it is new to him. And then I had Adil on the bench to cover this position, so I felt like I had enough options.”

Ian Poveda should also return to the matchday squad in the games ahead, having returned to full training last week. Le Bris said the winger should return to the squad ‘very quickly’.
