Sheffield Wednesday hero hits huge milestone as Owls accolades continue
Since joining the Owls in 2015, the 35-year-old midfielder has established himself as a Hillsborough mainstay. He just reached the 100 goal and assist milestone while playing for Wednesday, further cementing his legacy.
Despite his advanced age, Bannan continued to play a significant role over the weekend as Danny Röhl’s team defeated Oxford United 3-1 at the Kassam Stadium. He had more possessions (7.5) and made more accurate passes (57) than any other player on the pitch.
During his tenure at S6, “Baz” has experienced many highs and lows, including promotion, relegation, and the greatest comeback in the history of the play-offs. Over the weekend, he made his 425th appearance for the team in all competitions, making him the second most used player in Wednesday history, right behind Owls legend Johnny Fantham.
Here’s an updated list of the Owls’ top ten after Bannan joined it outright:
1. Andrew Wilson – 546
2. Jack Brown – 507
3. Alan Finney – 504
4. Kevin Pressman – 478
5. Tommy Crawshaw – 465
6. Redfern Froggatt – 458
7. Liam Palmer – 454
8. Don Megson – 442
9. John Fantham – 434
10. Barry Bannan – 425
With a top five berth within sight for Palmer and 450+ on the horizon for the captain assuming he keeps healthy for the remaining games, both players will be hoping to move up the list even further before the season ends.
