Sheffield Wednesday handed potential Danny Rohl boost as Southampton eye 52-year-old manager
Sheffield Wednesday may have a better chance of holding onto Danny Rohl if Southampton shows interest in former Denmark manager Kasper Hjulmand.
Southampton has a “long-standing interest” in Hjulmand, according to talkSPORT, and they may take him into consideration as they look to replace Russell Martin, who was fired on Sunday night.
In his first season as manager, Martin guided the Saints to promotion from the Championship through the play-offs last season, but the 38-year-old found life in the Premier League considerably more difficult.
Martin’s nearly 18-month time at Southampton came to an end when the team announced that they had made the “difficult decision” to fire him shortly after Sunday’s 5-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur at St Mary’s.
For Wednesday night’s EFL Cup match against Liverpool, under-21s boss Simon Rusk will serve as temporary manager. However, because the team is currently nine points from safety and at the bottom of the Premier League standings, they will probably be eager to hire a manager as soon as possible.

Southampton eyeing Kasper Hjulmand as potential Russell Martin replacement
Rohl, the manager of Sheffield Wednesday, was rumoured to be among the candidates to take over at Southampton
shortly after Martin’s departure was confirmed. Rohl served as Ralph Hasenhuttl’s assistant manager at St Mary’s,
helping the Saints stay in the Premier League during the 2018–19 season, and it appears that his outstanding work at
Wednesday has not gone unnoticed by his former club. The German arrived at Hillsborough last October with the
Owls sitting bottom of the Championship table with just three points to their name, but he led them to survival after
a spectacular turnaround, and after a strong start to this season, they are currently ninth, five points from the play-off spots.
However, Southampton have not yet made a formal approach to Wednesday for Rohl, and it is believed that the
compensation needed to bring him to the club could be a stumbling block, so the South Coast outfit are considering
alternatives, with two out-of-work foreign coaches said to be on their radar.
Hjulmand, who is free after stepping down as manager of the Danish national team in July after four years in charge,
may be one of those applicants.
Although he was unable to duplicate that success in subsequent competitions, Hjulmand led Denmark to the Euro
2020 semi-finals, where they lost to England 2-1. They also advanced past the group stage of this summer’s Euro
2024, losing 2-0 to hosts Germany in the round of 16.
The 52-year-old has been connected to several English teams over the years, including West Ham United, Burnley,
and Aston Villa, and is allegedly open to the idea of working in the Premier League.

Kasper Hjulmand reports will give Sheffield Wednesday hope in keeping Danny Rohl
When it was revealed that Southampton was interested in Rohl, Wednesday fans naturally feared the worst, but they
might feel more at ease knowing that the Saints are looking at other options.
Rohl would undoubtedly be a fantastic match for the Premier League struggling team after orchestrating a
spectacular comeback at Hillsborough the previous season. In addition, considering his stellar performance in the
championship over the past 12 months, he would be a wise long-term addition should they be demoted.
Rohl has already established a relationship with Southampton due to his previous time there, and following a
mysterious interview last week in which the 35-year-old appeared to wonder if Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri
would support him in January, he might be enticed by a move to the top flight.
But Chansiri is a notoriously tough owner to work with, and since the Owls will probably want a high price for Rohl,
the Saints might choose to focus on Hjulmand or other unemployed players.
