Southampton have considered appointing Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl as a successor for Russell Martin, but GIVEMESPORT sources have informed that this is unlikely to happen.
Martin was relieved of his duties on Sunday evening following a disastrous 5-0 loss at home to Tottenham Hotspur. The Saints are currently at the bottom of the Premier League table, having picked up only five points all season.
The Saints’ return to the Premier League was always going to be a challenging campaign as they fought for survival. The South Coast club is in a vulnerable position in terms of remaining in the division, and Southampton has now thrown the dice by firing Martin over the weekend.

A move is now unlikely
GIVEMESPORT sources know that Sheffield Wednesday boss Rohl has been approached by Southampton in the last 24 hours, but a move has been hindered by compensation. It is currently assumed that they will not proceed and may instead seek an abroad appointment.
Rohl’s Wednesday side is now in ninth place in the Championship, just five points from the play-off spots. The 35-year-old has done a fantastic job for the Yorkshire club since coming in 2023.
Southampton meet Liverpool in the EFL Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday night, so it will be intriguing to see if they can have a new manager in place by then. Southampton confirmed in a statement following Martin’s dismissal that Under-21s manager Simon Rusk would be appointed interim manager while the club searches for a permanent replacement.
The Saints return to Premier League play on Sunday, travelling to Fulham, and with Southampton nine points from safety, any new manager will face a difficult assignment in attempting to stay in the division. Given the squad’s abundance of young talent, it might still be an appealing job for a prospective Martin replacement.
