Move over Pereira: Wolves could hire PL legend who’s not managed in 3 years

Gary O’Neil, the manager of Wolves, has been fired following their fourth consecutive Premier League loss.

Their four consecutive losses against Bournemouth, Everton, West Ham, and Ipswich have proved costly, dropping them to 19th in the table and prompting O’Neil’s resignation.

Wolves dominated possession against Ipswich, with 54% possession, 16 shots (more than Ipswich’s 10), one major chance, and 1.27 xG (more than Ipswich’s 1.20). Despite exceeding the Tractor Boys in several categories, the most significant outcome was yet another loss.

Many circumstances have harmed O’Neil in his attempts to revitalize Wolves this season, including losing a few key players to injury and, more importantly, losing stars like Pedro Neto in the summer transfer window and failing to adequately replace them.

This season, O’Neil’s team has averaged 46.4% possession (14th in the division), 11 shots per game (fourth lowest in the league), and 14.6 shots against (sixth most).

This was a decrease from their possession average last season (48.6%), shots taken per game (11.3), and shots against (15.2), with their performance declining in all areas.

To add to this, Wolves only conceded 10 goals from set pieces in 38 games last season, but have already shipped 14 in 16 games this season.

With their performances diminishing this season, as well as acquiring a new Achilles heel, O’Neil’s tenure as Wolves manager is coming to an end, and they could already have a Premier League icon lined up to take over.

Despite these statements, there may be an alternative. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sighted at Molineux for Wolves’ 2-1 defeat over Ipswich as pressure mounted on O’Neil, sparking speculation that Solskjaer would take over as Wolves manager.

The Norwegian hasn’t been seen in management in three years, so it’s a big bet, but what precisely could he offer to the Midlands?
