Kasper Schmeichel in unseen Celtic penalty shootout move that ‘should have been sanctioned
According to a former referee, Kasper Schmeichel “should have been sanctioned” for standing inside the area during Celtic’s penalty shoot-out triumph over Rangers.
A social media clip showed the Hoops hero keeper within the penalty area as Arne Engels successfully dispatched his penalty past Jack Butland during the 5-4 spot kick win.
A fan asked TheRefsView podcast, hosted by former whistlers Des Roache and Steve Conroy, “What is Schmeichel doing here?” He performs this for two of Celtic’s penalties. “Surely this is not permitted.”
As Engels prepares to run, the Dane enters the box and gestures. Referee John Beaton stands on the edge of the six-yard box, looking directly at Schmeichel.
Including the IFAB regulations that state: “The goalkeeper of the kicker must remain on the field of play, outside the penalty area, on the goal line where it meets the penalty area boundary line.”
The account also stated, “Probably should be sanctioned, but no specific mention.” At the absolute least, he should be directed where to go. This should have been addressed, although it had no significant impact on the outcome of the game.
“It is not the responsibility of anyone other than IFAB that no specific sentence has been given. I’m guessing that will be dealt with starting immediately.”
