Fabrizio Romano Shares Big Vitor Pereira Update at Wolves
Wolves are apparently close to hiring the 56-year-old manager. Details on his release clause are now being finalized, and an agreement is expected soon.
Pereira, who has never worked in England, has won league titles with Porto, Olympiacos, and Chinese club Shanghai SIPG.
The 56-year-old was a candidate to take over at Everton and succeed Rafa Benitez in 2022, but the Toffees chose Frank Lampard.
Pereira joined Al Shabab in February of this year and led them to an eighth-place finish in the Saudi Pro League.
He might become the Wolves’ first Portuguese signing since Bruno Lage succeeded Nuno Espirito Santo in 2021.
Wolves fired O’Neil on Sunday morning after losing 2-1 at home to Ipswich Town, dropping them to 19th place in the Premier League rankings.
The 41-year-old was fired despite signing a new four-year contract with the club in August and leading Wolves to a 14th-place finish in 2023/24, his first year in charge.
Wolves have struggled defensively since former captain Max Kilman joined West Ham in the summer transfer window, surrendering 40 goals in their first 16 games.
The severity of the defeat against Ipswich persuaded the club’s administration that a change in the dugout was required.
Wolves lost a set piece in stoppage time against the Tractor Boys, leading to scuffles between Matheus Cunha and Rayan Ait-Nouri after the final whistle.
Wolves are five points from safety and will face Leicester City, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur in their final three games of 2024.
