Danny Rohl could face biggest Sheffield Wednesday dilemma yet as Southampton links emerge
Danny Rohl has undoubtedly been a success at Sheffield Wednesday, but he is currently in a difficult situation
because of rumours that he is being courted by Southampton, who are trying to find a new manager after Russell
Martin was fired.
After an unexpected start to the season under Xisco Munoz, the German manager took over on Wednesday, October
2023, when their Championship status already seemed certain. Unfortunately, on the last day, Rohl pulled off the
epic escape by overcoming an 11-point deficit to keep them in the division. He was accordingly rewarded with a new
“long-term” contract for his efforts.
Under contentious owner Dejphon Chansiri, Rohl has provided Hillsborough with stability and upward mobility
amid a more turbulent off-field environment. Following a 3-1 victory over Oxford United on the weekend, Rohl has
Wednesday in ninth position and just five points outside of the play-offs heading into the halfway point of the
season, allowing them to continue punching above their weight.

However, the popular boss is now set to meet perhaps his single most imposing dilemma with the Owls to date amid reports of Southampton’s interest.
Southampton’s reported Danny Rohl, Sheffield Wednesday interest following Russell Martin sacking
According to Jack Rosser of The Sun, who broke the story from his X account on Sunday night, Rohl has “admirers”
among the Saints’ hierarchy. The disclosure was made right after Southampton formally declared their intention to
split from Russell Martin, a move that had been hinted at for a while.
However, there are issues with any possible transfer for Rohl, according to a recent report from talkSPORT. “Likely
to be an issue” is the reason behind this. Although the exact amount the Saints would need to pay to bring the former
Bayern Munich assistant down south is unknown, it would undoubtedly not be inexpensive given his commitment to
a new long-term contract only back in the summer.
According to another recent update, this time from GIVEMESPORT, it’s a reason that is about to end Southampton’s
interest. With Southampton still looking for a Martin replacement, Wednesdayites’ concerns might not be entirely
allayed just yet, though, given the support Rohl seems to have at boardroom level from the Saints and the possibility
that things could turn out differently if he were to want to move.
Southampton had no choice but to fire the former Swansea City manager after Martin’s team suffered a humiliating
5-0 home loss to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, dealing him the ultimate blow of his time in Hampshire.
The 38-year-old guided Southampton back to the Premier League from the Championship at the first time of asking
by gaining promotion through the play-offs at the end of the previous season, although he wasn’t short of critics on
occasion and fell short of making the side competitive at the highest level.
Southampton has only amassed five points and one league win over fellow struggling team Everton under Martin,
putting them nine points below 17th-place Leicester City after just 16 games. His successor will face an almost
impossible challenge in trying to maintain Southampton in the top flight, as their fate seems already decided.
Although Southampton has not yet made it plain who they are interested in replacing Martin, Rohl obviously has
supporters, which is not surprising considering that he was once Ralph Hassenhutl’s assistant.
Danny Rohl’s Sheffield Wednesday dilemma amid Southampton interest
Wednesday supporters won’t be shocked to learn that Rohl is also interested in the Premier League. There is a fairly
long-term acceptance that the 35-year-old will manage in the Premier League at some point because of the
seriousness of his achievement in the Steel City and his unusually youthful age for a manager in the second division.
It remains to be seen if that will happen on Wednesday, but Southampton’s appreciation raises a significant question
that only Rohl can truly address. Although their rising trajectory is commendable in any case, he is now maintaining
a noticeable positive vibe in Sheffield’s blue-and-white neighbourhoods and even giving the team a chance to qualify for the playoffs.
Rohl is obviously very dedicated to the project, but he will want his accomplishments to be recognised with more
market support from Chansiri, which, as you might expect, might sway any choice.
Alternatively, Rohl could quite well leave to take on a new challenge which, if executed successfully, would do sheer
wonders for his stock. Southampton appear destined for the Championship either way, but to even go there and give
them half a chance at survival, let alone even pulling off a second great escape, would no doubt amplify his managerial credentials.
In all honesty, the Saints ought to be getting ready for life in the Championship by now, which supports their
enthusiasm for Rohl, who is unquestionably one of the top managers at this level and would offer them a good
chance of immediately rising again.
Getting a promotion, no matter how much it costs, would be fantastic for Rohl’s record. However, you have to
question whether he can accomplish this with the Owls, without any personal shortcomings.
He’s undoubtedly faced with a significant choice, and there are strong arguments for both staying and leaving.
