What Mick McCarthy really thought of Cardiff City and the question he refuses to answer
The former Bluebirds manager talked candidly about his tenure with the team.
Mick McCarthy expressed his disappointment at his second season becoming a “nightmare” after saying he “loved” his time at Cardiff City.
After Neil Harris was fired in January 2021, McCarthy took over as Cardiff was battling at the bottom of the table
after qualifying for the playoffs the previous season.
They flirted with the playoffs from a highly unusual position at the halfway point of the season when the former
Republic of Ireland manager inspired the side and led them on a late push up the table.
He started the season with an 11-game winning streak, but his second season saw him lose eight straight games, a
terrible start to the season that led to his dismissal in October of the same year. However, he has pleasant memories
of his time spent at the club.
“I thought it was fantastic! Yes, I did. Indeed. On this week’s Undr The Cosh, which was hosted by former Cardiff striker Jon Parkin, he declared, “It was fantastic.”
“We almost missed the playoffs the first season after dropping from 17th to seventh place. After that, we didn’t do a
lot of hiring, some guys had contracts expiring, and, to be honest, my second season was a nightmare.
“But I loved it. It’s a great place and a great club. The fans were brilliant, until you’re leaving and like everyone else…
well, the results were rubbish, so I deserved it.
“But the club is fabulous.”
But he will not respond to one question about his time at the club. McCarthy responded abruptly when Parkin asked
if he had ever worked under Vincent Tan. Get our Cardiff City newsletter every day by subscribing here.
Curtly, “I’m not saying anything about that,” he said.
Like other City supporters, McCarthy was dissatisfied with how the second season turned out. However, he correctly
points out that every manager since he left has faced difficulties for a cause.
However, when asked about his time at the club, he refuses to answer. When Parkin enquired as to whether
McCarthy had ever worked for Vincent Tan, he answered suddenly. Subscribe here to receive our Cardiff City email every day.
Curtly “I’m not saying anything about that,” he replied.
McCarthy, like most City fans, was disappointed with the outcome of the second season. He does, however, accurately note that every manager after his departure has encountered challenges for a reason.
Regarding some of the off-field activities, he remarked, “It was unusual.” “I had to enter the prayer room once, and I
did so out of respect for their beliefs, but I said, ‘Look, I’m a Catholic so we will leave that aside now.'” That type of
stuff was unique, but the team and the players present were excellent.
“The first season was excellent, so I was incredibly disappointed—you always are when you lose, of course. It
appeared like everything would go well, but it was challenging since so many players had contracts expiring and no
one was extending them.
“And it appears that everyone who has followed me since has had a tough time.
“Vincent Tan treated me with the utmost respect both at the top and elsewhere. We all have different opinions, but
it’s not usually how I would do things.”
