Sport opinion Kyogo is a man possessed against Rangers and I’m interested by recent Celtic grumbles – Chris Sutton.

Kyogo Furuhashi was fantastic and then frustrated. However, when playing Rangers, the Celtic striker typically performs exceptionally well.

First up is Kyogo, who has been a very different watch over the last week. He scored a stunning goal against Hibs on Saturday. But to then have the poise to fake and seat the keeper on his backside before lifting a finish over him was just stunning.

He had a great smile on his face afterwards, but compare that to the crowd that gathered at Maksimir Stadium on Tuesday night. Kyogo would have been keen to score Celtic’s first Champions League goal away from home, but it simply wasn’t his night.

He seemed slightly off it when receiving the ball and there were times he didn’t get possession that also caught my eye. On two or three occasions, he looked to have made a trademark darting run in behind only for the pass not to come his way or for the intended delivery to go astray.

It happened just before he went off in the second period against Dinamo and there’s nothing worse for a striker when you think you are in, you escape markers and then a team-mate either doesn’t spot you or doesn’t find you. It felt like that on occasions for Kyogo in Croatia, but I can only imagine that has made him even more determined to deliver at Hampden.

Kyogo has made it his business to hurt Rangers over the last several years, and he also has the fortunate ability to do it at the National Stadium in major and semi-finals. To be fair, Adam Idah had to come off the bench to help Brendan Rodgers’ club win the Scottish Cup Final in May.

But Kyogo was right back in the Old Firm rhythm when the clubs met for the first time this season, with a brilliant finish as Celtic cruised to a 3-0 victory. This was one of the season’s standout performances. Rodgers’ squad has occasionally produced some electrifying performances.

I am intrigued in the fact that there have been one or two complaints about recent games. I agree that Celtic have played in patches throughout some of those games, but they are still getting the job done, and I sympathize with the players in certain respects.

My former manager, Martin O’Neill, used to talk about how difficult it was to win games week after week. It takes a specific mindset to keep it going, and you can’t just keep firing.

I recall several poor days at Celtic when Henrik Larsson would come in and score a 1-0 win despite our subpar effort. Rodgers’ squad has set such high standards this season, but it is just impossible to reach peak performance every week, and the reaction to Zagreb on Tuesday said volumes.

I have to admit, I was startled to hear some dissatisfaction with the outcome and the 0-0 tie. Let’s be clear: if I were still playing and had been sitting on the team flight home, I would have been furious because I would have seen it as a squandered opportunity against a depleted home team, and according to several of the players, they did as well.

However, it wasn’t long ago that Borussia Dortmund scored seven goals against Celtic, and critics said they couldn’t defend at the level. Prior to this season, they had a terrible clean sheet record in the tournament. Now they have two clean sheets on the road in a row to collect two vital points in the playoff race, and some are complaining.
