Norwich City right-back Jack Stacey could see the signs of Jack Wilshere’s coaching future when the pair played together at Bournemouth.
Together, Stacey and Wilshere led the Cherries to the Championship play-off semi-finals in 2021 as City won the division, while Wilshere was nearing the conclusion of his professional career.
Since Wilshere was named the Canaries’ new first-team coach in October, they have now reconnected, and the 28-year-old is not at all shocked that he has chosen this route.
“When I played with Jack he was coming towards the end of his career, and you could see that he would go into coaching,” recalled Stacey. “I was genuinely surprised by how well he interacted with the guys.
“He had a successful career as an England international and arrived with such humility. He addressed everyone in precisely the same way, and he has done the same here.
“So it was great for him to come in, and you can see the quality and the bright future he has as a coach.”
Wilshere left Arsenal, where he was a star player and the manager of the under-18 team, to take his first senior position under Johannes Hoff Thorup. According to his now-charge, that speaks well of both his attitude and the project being constructed at Carrow Road.
.”I think it shows that the club’s a place that can attract the best young coaches, and it also shows for him that he’s willing to learn and almost work his way up into coaching, which is amazing,” said the Norwich number three.
Everyone is watching and learning from him while he performs a few drills on the field, so that can only be a good thing. You can’t claim that Jack’s [passing] service is poor, unlike some coaches.”
