Mansfield v Argyle – Reasons to be Cheerful

Mansfield v Argyle – Reasons to be Cheerful

First Impressions
In 1958, Argyle and Mansfield Town played their first match. Wilf Carter scored a hat-trick and Peter Andersen also
scored as the Pilgrims emerged victorious 4-0. However, Argyle’s dealings with Mansfield did not end there. Wilf
Carter scored another goal as the Pilgrims defeated the Stags in March 1959, later in the season. That day, Argyle
won 8-3 at Home Park thanks to goals from Alex Govan, Harry Penk, and Jimmy Gauld, as well as two own goals
and a brace from Johnny Williams.
On the Road Again
Argyle defeated Wycombe Wanderers in a decisive away win at Adams Park last time out. With Saturday’s opponents
in 11th place, the Pilgrims are currently in second place in the standings. This season, Argyle has won three of their
four league away games, returning to Home Park with a commanding nine-point haul. Mansfield has won just once
and drawn their other three games at One Call Stadium this season, despite being undefeated at home.
It’s the Bickle Things
A double from Mike Bickle propelled the Pilgrims to victory as Argyle walked past Mansfield away from home in
September 1970. Don Hutchins, Bobby Saxton, and Keith Allen also scored goals. It was an uncommon high point.
Though, as the Stags had a better season, finishing eighth while Argyle ended up in 15th place.
Recent History
The last time the Pilgrims defeated Mansfield was only five months ago at Home Park, so you don’t have to look very
far back. Carl McHugh and Anthony O’Connor are listed in the record books as the Argyle goal scorers on that
particular day, though Anto may dispute the second goal! It ended up being 2-1. The Stags’ goal that day was scored
by Vadaine Oliver, who is now on loan at York City.
