Door smashing burglar who crashed into shops in stolen cars is sentenced

A serial burglar who crashed his way into multiple shops across Norwich has been sentenced after being caught red-handed.

On May 21, police went to allegations of an active burglary on Gloucester Street and apprehended Michael Dyer, 51, of Brazen Gate in Norwich.

He appeared in Norwich Crown Court on Tuesday after confessing to seven charges, including five burglaries, one handling stolen items, and one theft of a car.

Dyer admitted to the charges before requesting that nine more be considered, including seven burglaries and the handling of two stolen vehicles.

The court then heard how car keys were obtained during a house burglary on May 17, when a silver VW Golf was stolen.

The automobile was located the next day with a broken bumper after being used to force entrance into a grocery store on Bowthorpe Road, which was captured on CCTV.

On May 18, the proprietor of a shop on Hall Road realized that his business had been destroyed and valuables stolen.

CCTV footage shows a car hitting the shop door twice, followed by a man racing into the business and snatching the cash register, resulting in losses and damage costing the shopkeeper over £400.

Dyer also used a stolen vehicle to reverse into the front doors of a shop on March 15.

He stole cash, tobacco, and vaping items worth £11,000 in total, including car damage.

Dyer was sentenced to 150 hours of unpaid work, 15 days of Rehabilitative Activity Requirement, 20 days in an authorized program, and a 12-month drug rehabilitation requirement.
