Barnsley boss Darrell Clarke has said they have to ‘improve’ the squad this winter.
Barnsley want to be busy in the next January transfer window, looking to reinforce their ranks with some new faces ahead of the second half of the season.
The Tykes are currently in eighth place in League One, four points behind the top six teams.
Clarke has provided an update on their recruitment ambitions, according to the Barnsley Chronicle: “Judge us after the window. We need to strengthen because there were many changes (last summer).
“We want to get out of the division; that goes without saying.” We need to improve the squad as much as we can during the window. I’m having excellent discussions with Mladen (Sormaz, the sporting director) and the board. We are on the same page and understand where we need to improve.”
Barnsley eyeing signings
Bolton Wanderers defeated Barnsley in the play-offs at the semi-final stage last season.
They lost the previous year’s final to Sheffield Wednesday at Wembley Stadium.
The Tykes are expecting to be up there again this season and hired Darrell Clarke, who previously managed Bristol Rovers, Port Vale, and Walsall, in the summer after leaving Cheltenham Town.
Barnsley strengthened their team by signing Marc Roberts, Stephen Humphrys, Davis Kellior-Dunn, and Georgie Gent, among others.
They also parted ways with players like Callum Styles, Herbie Kane, Jordan Williams, and Devante Cole, which helped free up space and finances in their squad.
Despite losing a few key players, the Yorkshire club is not in a bad situation right now and will be able to push on if they can get the correct targets next month.
What now?
Barnsley return to play this weekend with a challenging road journey to Exeter City as they try to cut the gap on Reading in sixth place. Bolton Wanderers are ahead of them in seventh place.
Clarke’s men have lost their last two games in a row to Wrexham and Birmingham City.
The latter defeated them 2-1 at Oakwell last time out, and they will be looking to rebound with a win over the Grecians. Adam Phillips was sent off against the Blues.
