“Embarrassed” ex-Sheffield Wednesday man outlines Plymouth’s Sheffield United plan amid Michael Cooper verdict

Before Michael Cooper’s reunion, the “embarrassed” former Owl describes Plymouth’s strategy for the Sheffield United trip.

When table-topping Sheffield United, who have made Bramhall Lane a fortress this season, play a struggling

Plymouth Argyle team that can’t afford a road victory tomorrow afternoon, the larger football community would
anticipate a home victory. However, Blades manager Chris Wilder has urged his team to avoid complacency and
conceit, and the Pilgrims won’t be visiting South Yorkshire merely to defend.

That’s the verdict of Plymouth defender Lewis Gibson, making his return to the Steel City after a short loan spell with

United’s city rivals Wednesday a few years back. He this week admitted he was “embarrassed” and “a bit angry” by

his side’s defensive record this season, having shipped 40 goals in their 19 league games so far, with Plymouth going

into the game on the back of one win in their last 10 games and none away from home since the campaign kicked off.

With their promotion push based on strong defensive foundations, United hasn’t exactly been scoring goals on their
own this season. Gibson stated on Plymouth Live: “I don’t think we are going to go there and sit back.” That’s not the
best approach, in my opinion. In my opinion, that is not what the fans want to see, nor is it what we as a squad want to do.
“Therefore, I don’t think we’ll go there and just sit there and hope for a 0-0 or try to wait as long as possible until the
inevitable occurs. I believe that the game will have a great aspect.

The Blades signed Michael Cooper in the summer, and since then, he has more clean sheets than any other custodian

in the Championship. Argyle players, staff and supporters will be reunited with Cooper at Bramall Lane. “He’s doing
really well there,” Gibson continued, “but it has been a difficult place to go, so hopefully we can try to put a few past
him.” However, it’s encouraging to see him succeeding since he is a decent man.
