A History of Boro in 50 Objects: A silver plate from AS Roma (1970)
Boro eliminated the formidable Roma from the Anglo-Italian Cup thanks to a goal from Derrick Downing. Fabio Capello played midfield for the Italian team.
Another winger named Stewart Downing was the star of the show for Boro against the Italian powerhouses more than 25 years before his cross for Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink helped Boro defeat the formidable Roma in the 2006 UEFA Cup.
Eight days after Boro’s 1-0 triumph in the first leg, the two teams tied 1-1 in the Anglo-Italian Cup on May 10, 1970, with Derrick Downing—who has no relation to Stewart—scoring the goal for Boro.
To honour the match, Boro officials were given this straightforward silver plate, which is somewhat tarnished like the competition.
Fabio Capello, a midfielder who would go on to become famous as a player with Juventus and Italy before a stellar managerial career that has included Milan, Real Madrid, Roma, Juventus, England, and now Russia, was in the starting lineup for the 1969 Coppa Italia victors on that day.
Roma had lost 5-2 to League Cup winners Swindon Town in a two-leg Anglo-Italian Cup preliminary match the year before they played Boro.
In front of 50,000 spectators at Rome’s Stadio Olimpico, former Boro striker Arthur Horsfield scored a hat-trick in the second leg, while Kevin Howley, a native of Middlesbrough, officiated the first match.
This time Boro missed out on qualification for the final as the result of a bizarre system that awarded points not only for results but for every goal scored.
