Worse than Phillips: Ipswich may have made a mistake signing £15m ace

The past three years have been an amazing roller coaster for Ipswich Town. After taking over in late 2021, Kieran McKenna guided them in just two and a half seasons from League One to the Premier League.

The Tractor Boys brought in excellent players like Liam Delap, Sammie Szmodics, and Jens Cajuste, who are all crucial to the team’s aim of avoiding relegation, as a thank you for the Northern Irishman’s outstanding achievements during the summer transfer window.

Phillips’ Ipswich struggles

Phillips made 10 starts, lost six games, had a red card, and then returned from a devilish short-term loan to West Ham United last season.

Luckily for him, Ipswich saw a chance to bring someone with a lot of Premier League experience and a point to make to Portman Road, and they recruited the former Leeds United captain on a season-long loan in mid-August.

The 31-cap international looked like he would be a valuable addition to the team at first, even though he wasn’t playing at his best. However, he was sent off against Leicester City, effectively costing the team what would have been their first victory in an early relegation six-pointer.

The Leeds-born midfielder hasn’t featured at all since that incident, but there is a feeling that, given his incredible experience and undeniable talent, he could still play an important role as the season proceeds, even if it’s not as a regular starter.

However, while there is reason to be hopeful about Phillips’ future in East Anglia, the same cannot be said about another of the club’s significant summer signings.

The Ipswich signing worse than Phillips

So, with most of Ipswich’s summer signings already accounted for, it should come as no surprise that the potential flop in question is Jack Clarke.

As of right now, things aren’t looking good, so we say “potential” because it’s probably too early to say anything with absolute confidence.

The Tractor Boys agreed to pay Sunderland £15 million for the “unplayable” attacker, as analyst Adrian Clarke called him. Given that he had only played 92 games for the Black Cats in the previous two seasons, scoring 26 goals and dishing out 18 assists, it seemed like a great deal.

The former Leeds United star hasn’t looked quite as good since moving to Suffolk, though, as the player who had been tearing up Championship defenses for the previous two years.

For instance, the 24-year-old hasn’t scored a goal or offered an assist in his 14 games thus far, totaling 559 minutes of activity, which is insufficient.
