Aston Villa’s 3-2 victory over RB Leipzig was a huge step towards automatic qualification for the UEFA Champions League knockout round. Ross Barkley came off the substitute to score a late deflection winner.
Lois Openda (27′) and Christoph Baumgartner (62′) gave Marco Rose’s team a spectacular comeback against the Premier League visitors after Villa twice took the lead in a breathless match in Germany with to goals from captain John McGinn (3′) and free-scoring substitute Jhon Duran (52′).
On the 85th minute, however, Barkley’s speculative shot took a tremendous deflection from Lukas Klostermann to nestle in the home net, giving Unai Emery’s team a well-earned victory.
Villa move onto 13 points from six matches, third in the standings, but Leipzig’s forgettable campaign is over after a sixth-straight defeat.
