Michael Stewart shares how Hearts can extend Lawrence Shankland’s stint without ‘crazy’ money

Michael Stewart feels there is a possibility that Lawrence Shankland may sign an extension with Hearts, but the club must first make an offer.

The striker has been the club’s talisman since arriving in 2022, but his contract expires at the conclusion of this season. CEO Andrew McKinlay revealed last week that no live contract offer is currently on the table, following unsuccessful past negotiations.

Former Hearts midfielder Stewart believes the club should always have a deal in place for Shankland to sign if he chooses to do so. He stated on Sportsound: “Regardless of what you think about whether he’ll sign it or not, I think it’s insane for Hearts not to always have an offer on the table.

“You know, it’s almost like politics here; you’re just playing a game. For me, the deal must always be on the table. Make it known that there is a deal sitting on the table.”

Stewart reminded Shankland that Hearts had offered him a new deal, which was rejected. Shankland responded, “Yeah, I get that, but the offer’s there on the table, just to say, ‘look, we are open to negotiating.'” The offer is currently lower, but it could quickly rise again. The point is, you leave an offer on the table and say quite clearly to everyone, ‘we want you to stay, sign or n

Regarding the contract issue, Stewart believes an extension with Hearts is possible provided the club gives the striker something to think about. He went on to say, “I’m as startled as anyone that no one was knocking on the door. I can’t quite believe it. This turns into a game of cat and mouse. I think the transfer fee is a huge stumbling block.

“I believe there is a way to reach a compromise. Although the transfer fee was a stumbling block, I don’t believe it should have been. I believe, and I hope this is proven accurate, that a compromise might be reached if Hearts put some money on the table.

“I don’t believe it needs to be crazy, but this is a good time since Shankland undoubtedly wants to wait as long as possible. What Hearts needs to do is sow a seed of doubt in his mind, making him consider, “Should I cash in now?”
