Messi’s Miami teammate makes Premier League move
The Paraguayan international is in London after finishing the season with Inter Miami, as the big multi-million dollar transfer is agreed.
Diego Gómez has officially become part of Inter Miami’s history. The Paraguayan midfielder is currently in London, signing his contract with Brighton & Hove Albion. As reported by AS, the Herons will receive around $17 million for the former Olimpia star, marking a record transfer fee for the club owned by Jorge Mas and David Beckham.
Gómez has signed a five-year deal, tying him to Brighton until June 2030, and he will officially join the team when the transfer window opens on January 1, 2025.
“We’re just waiting for the official date to make the announcements, but everything is going well. We’re very happy with everything happening for Diego Gómez. This is just the beginning—he’s young and has plenty of room for improvement,” said Renato Bittar, the player’s agent.
“There are just a few details to finalize, but it’s only a matter of time. We’re waiting for the market to open to complete the paperwork, but everything is on track,” he added.
Signed in July 2023 from Paraguay, Gómez established himself as one of South America’s most promising midfielders this season. Under Tata Martino’s guidance, the Paraguayan developed into a crucial player in Fort Lauderdale, often considered untouchable. Partnering with Busquets in midfield, Gómez had his best individual season, scoring five goals and providing six assists across all competitions. However, his greatest achievement came with Paraguay, where he played a pivotal role in securing the Albirroja’s qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Gomez adds to Hürzeler options at Brighton
Diego joins a highly competitive Brighton squad, currently battling for a European place in the English top flight. Rather than being sent out on loan, the plan is for him to stay and fight for a spot alongside O’Riley, Baleba, Matts Wieffer, Ayari, and Hinshelwood. At the Falmer Stadium, Gómez will reunite with Julio Enciso, one of his close confidants from Paraguay, although Enciso’s future at the club remains uncertain. The Premier League now awaits its newest rising star.
