“I wouldn’t be surprised” – West Brom touted to offload senior player in January
After an impressive start to the season, which saw the Baggies reach the top of the Championship table, a run of 10 draws in their last 11 Championship games has left the Midlands club just outside the play-off places and nine points behind an automatic promotion spot after 19 games.
As the hectic festive season approaches in the second tier, Carlos Corberan will be hoping his side can remain in the promotion race when they enter the January transfer window, with business done in the new year likely to have a significant impact on where the club finishes at the end of the season.
Despite Shilen Patel’s ownership of Albion, the club is close to breaching Profit and Sustainability standards (PSR), requiring additional cost-cutting measures.
Based on this, the Black Country outfit will most likely have to sell to buy during the upcoming window, and FLW’s West Brom fan analyst Callum Burgess has identified a senior figure with whom the club might consider parting ways.
West Brom fan analyst Callum Burgess believes the club should consider selling club captain Jed Wallace, who has struggled for consistent game time at The Hawthorns this season. Burgess spoke exclusively with Football League World.
Burgess speculated that Jed Wallace, despite being a senior professional and captain, may be dissatisfied with his new job.
“I’ve previously discussed how Tom Fellows has cemented his place in the club and how, over the last year, Wallace has become more of a bit-part player at best, limited to approximately 20 minutes off the bench when he plays for us.
“On the rare occasions when he does start, he’s failed to make much of an impact, so I expect in January or next summer for Wallace to move elsewhere to play consistent football in the final years of his career.”
Despite a long history of poor play in the second tier, Burgess said the 30-year-old may still be a valuable asset to Championship teams.
Callum added: “He (Wallace) might still have something to show for a bottom-half Championship side, where managers may believe they can get the best out of him from his Millwall days and give him the responsibility of being a key player, so some teams may see that as an opportunity to sign him.
“Wallace has been a great figure to have at Albion, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he wanted to move away in the near future.”
It’s hardly unexpected that Albion fans wish to bid farewell to Wallace during the January transfer window, given the winger’s lack of significant contributions this season.
Wallace has not made an attacking contribution in 14 Championship appearances for the Baggies. He is unlikely to return to the first squad as academy product Tom Fellows continues to establish himself at The Hawthorns.
Wallace’s Albion career may end soon, as Luton Town and his former employer, Portsmouth, expressed interest in his services earlier this summer.
If the money received for Wallace is solely for player investment, West Brom should seriously consider offloading a player who is struggling to produce at The Hawthorns, but that’s not to say he can’t make an impact for one of Albion’s second-tier rivals, as he’ll most likely be playing at that level if he leaves.
