The real reason why Wolves haven’t sacked Gary O’Neil despite West Ham defeat

After suffering crushing defeats to Bournemouth and Everton, Gary O’Neil understood that Wolves’ matchup with West Ham was crucial to the team’s success and his employment.

The Old Gold displayed some encouraging signals, like they have done all season, but West Ham defeated Wolves 2-1 in the end.

At the final whistle, it caused unpleasant scenes as O’Neil gave Wolves supporters an update on his future while Mario Lemina got into a fight with Jarrad Bowen.

The 41-year-old revealed that, despite their third loss in a row, the board still fully support the manager. Now, it’s emerged why he hasn’t been dismissed.

Wolves are actively seeking Gary O’Neil replacements

The hunt for a new manager has started, even though O’Neil is still in the dugout.

Graham Potter and Wolves had discussions last month, while David Moyes, the former manager of West Ham, has also surfaced as a potential candidate.

During the hiring process, Wolves looks for Premier League experience, and both of the aforementioned have enough of it.

Potter and Moyes, however, are not interested in working for Fosun because of his self-sustaining business model and incapacity to support the management.

The Old Gold are actively looking for a replacement for O’Neil and are aware that a prompt resolution is necessary to avoid further alienating the fan base, according to Sky Sports writer Johnny Phillips via Blue Sky.

“Wolves’ head coach situation not pleasant for all involved,” Phillips wrote. “Club actively seeking replacements but aware of the need to get a swift resolution while not further alienating the fanbase, who have become vocal in criticism of Gary O’Neil – who took the West Ham game despite all this.”

Wolves will struggle to find a top O’Neil replacement

It is no longer acceptable for O’Neil to be in the dugout. Wolves have the weakest defense in the Premier League, and he has only managed two victories since April.

Two of his finest players were sold during the transfer window without a replacement, which hasn’t helped the Englishman, but once he is fired, he won’t be able to complain.

Nevertheless, Fosun is the main obstacle Wolves is facing in their hunt for a new manager because no good applicant wants to work for a team where they would be held back.

This explains why there has been a delay in firing O’Neil: it is nearly impossible to find a manager with Premier League experience who is willing to be the owner’s puppet.
