Sky Sports Neil Critchley on Hearts out of contract pair as boss makes feelings clear to club chiefs

Sky Sports Neil Critchley on Hearts out of contract pair as boss makes feelings clear to club chiefs.

Hearts have two Scotland international goalkeepers fighting for a starting spot.

Last season, Zander Clark won that race, leaving veteran Craig Gordon to make do as the Jambos’ cup custodian and have a few other appearances here and there. However, after missing out on the Euro 2024 Scotland squad and seeing a club teammate go instead, the 41-year-old has reclaimed his club status and is now the number one again. Clark has only appeared twice this season, both in the Premiership, and the goalkeeping position has been the subject of much debate among fans this season. Another complicating factor is that both will be out of contract next summer.

Critchley on Hearts‘ Gordon and Clark It means Hearts must make a decision, as do both players. Gordon is certainly still going strong at the age of 41, but his age cannot be disregarded, and retirement is not far off, even if it hasn’t arrived yet. Clark is talented enough to be a number one someplace and will not be content kicking his heels – why would he sign another deal to continue playing second fiddle?

Should Hearts prioritise his happiness over the older goalkeeper knowing he has longer left in the game?

Manager Neil Critchley has commented about the situation. He told the Edinburgh News: “Yes, there is a situation with Zander and Craigie, and I have recently discussed it with Graeme (Jones, sporting director).” “So that’s for Graeme and the club. They understand my thoughts. “Zander is a top professional and a great guy. Even though he’s sad not to be playing – since he is a No.1 – I have to say the way he exercises and handles himself among the group every day is remarkable. So that is something we may consider in the future.”

Clark willing to fight for Hearts place

Critchley acknowledges Clark’s desire to stay at Hearts, but emphasises the importance of considering all factors. “Zander’s feelings – he’s at a stage of his career where he was playing last season. He was out of the team before I got here. “Craigie’s done brilliantly since I’ve been here, so I don’t see any reason to change that at the moment. “It’s difficult when you can only pick one. I think we’ve got two No.1s and Fullers.”

Lawrence Shankland is another player who is out of contract, and Hearts have been advised that not making an offer for him is’mental’.
