Man who assaulted protester during Middlesbrough riots ‘feared for local mosque’

As the victim lay in a ditch, a group of Asian men, including Ameer Khalile, raced towards him and said, “You white scum,” before kicking him.

According to a judge, a man who attacked a lone demonstrator during Middlesbrough riots “feared repercussions for the local mosque and Asian community” as the event descended into violence.

On August 4, a gang of Asian men, including 25-year-old Ameer Khalile, raced towards the victim while yelling “you white scum” and “you white racist c****” outside a pub.

According to a court, he then kicked the man while he was lying face down in a water-filled ditch.

The victim attended the rally, which was held during the nationwide unrest that broke out, according to the Teesside Crown Court.

He then kicked the man as he lay face down in a ditch filled with water, a judge was told.

As he tried to find his friend outside the Intrepid Explorer pub in Linthorpe Road, he saw a group of Asian men running in his direction shouting racist comments and accusing him and others of smashing up a local mosque, a judge heard.

He tried to run but tripped over some temporary fencing around roadworks and fell into a ditch filled with water, where Khalile and the other men kicked him.

The court heard Khalile ran away and was seen at the door of a pub aiming a punch at someone and kicking at the door.

After entering a guilty plea to violent disorder and attempting to inflict grievous bodily harm with intent, Khalile, of Limerick Avenue, Stockton, was sentenced to 34 months in prison.

According to the court’s mitigation, Khalile “became caught up with the emotions” on the day after hearing the “rhetoric whipped up by far right extremists” following the Southport attacks out of concern for the local mosque and Asian community.

The victim “had done nothing to any of you – he had been, probably, attacked because he was white,” Judge Richard Clews informed Khalile.

“He was face down, he could quite easily have drowned,” the judge stated at the time of the attack.

Reporters were there when Cleveland Police conducted raids on Khalile’s Stockton house on August 28 and took him into custody.

As he was escorted to the police vehicle, he cursed at the journalists, calling them “muppets” and stating, “Go and get some proper news.”
