After a terrible start to the Premier League season, Southampton manager Russell Martin is getting closer to leaving St. Mary’s; but, according to local journalist Alfie House, there has been no update on the Saints manager’s future.
At the best of times, Southampton has been hindered by Martin’s emphasis on playing a possession-based style by passing out from the back, particularly against Chelsea, Liverpool, and Brentford this season. Martin’s team is already eight points outside the relegation zone, and things are starting to look dire for them. If nothing changes, they may be forced to drop, which may only happen if a more realistic manager is hired to take the 38-year-old’s position.
Russell Martin Dismissal Talk ‘Fairly Quiet’
The Southampton gaffer has been in poor form this season
Speaking on the ‘Total Saints’ podcast, however, House feels that despite Martin’s turbulent start to the season, there has been no word about his possible removal. He stated:
“I will state that the club is keeping their cards close to the vest on this, and we didn’t receive any news today. According to what I’ve been informed by a few people I asked, it’s been rather calm.
“You have to presume that he will be in control of Spurs if we don’t hear anything in the next day or two.
The south coast club will have a points-per-game record of just one point per 3.8 games if they don’t win any of their next four games. This is less than Derby County’s undesirable record of just 11 points in a Premier League season when considered over the course of a season.
That record hasn’t been contested very frequently, and if he has a bad showing against Tottenham Hotspur this weekend, he may have to go with a better run of games against Fulham, West Ham United, and Crystal Palace ahead of him.
