Birmingham City had big plans to win League One and spent a lot of money during the summer transfer window.
But the Blues are actually in a battle for promotion by default. Despite having games in hand over everyone else, Chris Davies’ team now sits third in the League One standings, one point behind current leaders Wycombe Wanderers and Wrexham in second place.
The team shouldn’t have much work to do in January after such a hectic summer. Some players, though, might be watching exits.
We have listed three players who ought to be considering leaving Birmingham City during the winter transfer window.
Dion Sanderson
According to reports, Birmingham City may be willing to let go of former captain Dion Sanderson come January. If that’s the case, the center-back will have to make a strong push to go.
He has previously played well in the Championship and will have many of supporters if an exit is approved. In spite of his lack of playing time in League One, it wouldn’t be shocking if he moved up to the second division.
The depth of the center-back makes it doubtful that the Blues will stand in his way.
Marc Leonard
Marc Leonard was one of the many high-profile additions Birmingham City made in the summer. Championship interest was sparked by his 2023–24 season as a star in League One with Northampton Town.
But since joining the Blues, he hasn’t played nearly as much as his skills would have allowed. Therefore, it would be a waste for him to remain lower on the hierarchy.
His season might be revived by a loan, but it’s not impossible that a savvy Championship team would consider a long-term contract.
Brandon Khela
With so much midfield quality ahead of him in Birmingham City’s hierarchy, promising academy graduate Brandon Khela might profit from a winter loan move.
He previously played for Ross County in Scotland, but a move to League Two might be the best next step for his growth. There will be plenty of suitors for Khela in January if City shares that viewpoint.
Considering how well-stocked the first team roster is, he is one of numerous prospects who could gain from playing time elsewhere.
