3 players who must look to leave Blackburn Rovers when the January transfer window opens
Blackburn Rovers are preparing for a crucial January transfer window in an attempt to continue their unexpected play-off run.
Many predicted Blackburn Rovers would struggle in the upcoming season, particularly after star player Sammie Szmodics joined promotion-winning Ipswich Town in the Premier League.
John Eustace’s outstanding effort, however, has elevated Rovers above what practically everyone had anticipated. They are just outside of the play-off spots and now sit sixth in the Championship table as the season draws to a close.
Many are optimistic about what the campaign’s second half can bring if Eustace receives some support in January, as there are a few crucial areas that require improvement. Departures may be facilitated by signings, but certain people may gain from movements regardless of incomings.
With that said, here are three Blackburn Rovers players who could benefit from heading out in January…
Harry Leonard
Promising striker Harry Leonard made his long-awaited injured return with some impressive performances for the Blackburn Rovers U21s, sparking enthusiasm.
However, Leonard hasn’t found many opportunities at all, despite Yuki Ohashi and Makhtar Gueye’s ongoing goal-scoring struggles. He has only played six minutes and been an unutilised substitute in four of the last five games.
As a result, Leonard could be able to acquire the playing time he needs on loan if another attacker ends up joining. For a League One team, he would be an excellent half-season addition.
John Buckley
John Buckley is another academy graduate who might gain from playing abroad.
After returning to Blackburn Rovers from a difficult loan at Sheffield Wednesday the previous season, the midfielder appeared to be a fantastic asset for Eustace, but this time around, Lewis Travis and Sondre Tronstad have firmly secured the starting positions. Consequently, Buckley has only played 84 minutes as a substitute in the Championship.
A new loan could appeal to Buckley, but perhaps even a permanent exit would be considered at the right price.
Joe Hilton
Not to be overlooked is Joe Hilton, who has alternated between Blackburn Rovers’ second and third choice goalie. Given that his contract is up in 2025, a winter departure would provide him the opportunity to go out and begin a new chapter in his life.
Hilton is now 25 years old and ready to compete for a regular starting spot, but Rovers are unlikely to give him that opportunity with Aysnley Pears and Balasz Toth on the roster.
Both Jack Barrett and Nicholas Michalski could provide cover in goal, so Blackburn wouldn’t be left short if they approved a Hilton move.
