Reason behind Callum Paterson’s shock Sheffield Wednesday absence revealed

Callum Paterson was unexpectedly left out of Saturday’s 1-1 Championship tie between Preston North End and Sheffield Wednesday.

For the first time since October, the powerful Scot, who came off the bench to assist Jamal Lowe’s last-minute winner at Derby County the weekend before, was completely absent from the team. Danny Röhl, the Owls’ manager, clarified that his absence was due to an ailment he sustained throughout the week. He clarified that the problem was minor, but he stopped well short of providing a timeline for a potential return. As the injury heals, more evaluations will be conducted.

“Pato had an injury, a knee injury in training,” Röhl told The Star. “Let’s see, at first it looks not so good but also not so bad. He needs a bit of recovery time, we will see now when he is back. We know this with the schedule, in one week even if it is a small injury a player can miss three games. All the other guys are so far OK.”

In challenging weather, the draw with Preston was a tangled tug of war. Even though Preston won the game and Wednesday dropped to ninth place in the standings due to other results, Röhl was open about his displeasure with his team’s performance and questioned how his players handle tighter, more difficult games.

Röhl responded, “It could have been,” when asked if the game could have been the kind of afternoon where Paterson could have had an influence. We had the option of bringing another combative target player forward. We wanted Smudge to collaborate with Jamal in the same way as it did against Derby. I had to make too many adjustments today for my taste.”
