There was little controversy around Celtic’s victory over Hibs, as the Hoops increased their lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership yesterday afternoon.
Celtic defeated the Easter Road club for the 60th time thanks to goals from Arne Engels and Kyogo Furuhashi, as well as an own goal from Joe Newell of Hibs.
Arne Engels looked to stand on a Hibs player’s leg during a challenge for the ball in the first half, though, and Celtic were the subject of a VAR review.
Although Michael Stewart and two former SFA referees have given varying opinions on whether or not the Celtic midfielder should have been sent off early, VAR decided that the challenge did not warrant a red card.
Arne Engels of Celtic ought to have received a “red card” against Hibs.
Des Roache and Steve Conroy, the two former SFA referees, will go first. Both are now a part of a new podcast account called The Ref’s View, which was once part of the Behind The Whisltes podcast.
Additionally, it seems that both previous referees concur with a fan who stated that Engels should have been sent out based on Hibs pair Jonathan Obita and Joe Newell’s red cards earlier in the season.
“I would agree completely,” they posted on social media channel X. However, as long as human judgment is involved, we will never achieve total agreement. We’re getting a red card.
