Fans fuming after Martin aims ‘cheer’ dig at travelling supporters

Russell Martin, the manager of SAINTS, infuriated the fans with a weird jab at the away fans after his team lost 1-0

to Aston Villa.

Jhon Duran scored the game’s lone goal in the 24th minute, shortly after a tense possession play at Villa Park.

Joe Lumley, the goalie, sent the ball directly to the home team in the box, but they were unable to capitalise as two attempts at the open goal were stopped.

The travelling Saints supporters to his left gave an ironic cheer when the shaken Lumley soon decided to go long with

the ball at his feet instead.

“We played out and got pressed just before that, which then makes Joe kick and it gets a cheer from the supporters,

and we concede within about 10 seconds, so it is what it is,” stated Martin in an interview with BBC Radio Solent.

“They are free to critique everything else, but it’s crucial to comprehend the motivations behind our actions. It

returns when we kick it to our two smallest players.

When supporters risked the weather of Storm Darragh to follow Saints to the Midlands, they were left feeling

confused and incensed at the perceived slight.

Although Martin did not ‘blame’ supporters for the goal as some have suggested – he only pointed out a fact – it is an

unwise dig.

Saints have won fewer points (five) after 15 matches than Derby County did in 2007/08, when they went on to set

the Premier League’s record lowest points total.

When asked about his future, Martin said, “It is not in my control, what is in my control is the energy I can give my

players.” “I cannot work out how we are on five points with big decisions against us and terrible injuries. It will be

down to the owners’ belief in us and what we do.” The team’s 5-1 midweek loss to Chelsea left supporters feeling very

disappointed, and the trip to Villa Park did little to allay their worries. They managed zero shots on goal for the

second time in a league game this season and are responsible for 50% of such incidents in the division.”
