Long-term injuries have cost McKenna George Hirst, Axel Tuanzebe, and Chiedozie Ogbene, all of whom were significant losses.
McKenna stated, “These three players have the most physical profiles and are crucial to the level at which we compete.”
“We’re in a similar situation going into this one. A couple are nursing injuries, but they managed them to join the squad on Tuesday night.
“With a busy schedule coming up, we’re still trying to manage through those and make the right decisions to get the best team out on the field for any given game, but we also don’t want to take any unnecessary risks.”
Phillips and Johnson, who were previously out due to a rolled ankle and a minor muscle strain, are those players, McKenna said, adding that there were no additional injuries from Tuesday.
“Yes,” he answered, “both are still not 100 percent. They were both in the squad the other night, but they were probably not at 100 percent yet, so they are still working toward that.”
He responded, “That’s a question that we’re looking at at the moment,” when asked about Cajuste, who has performed well in central midfield during Phillips’ absence, and whether the Swedish international, who had not played much football before the recent run, is dealing with a knee issue. Playing three 90s in eight days seems like an excessive risk, in my opinion.
“He’s still working on improving his fitness and managing a previous issue, and we’re trying to strike a careful balance between getting him on the field where he can contribute and help us and not pushing him too far where there’s a chance we could lose him for a long time.”
“We’re currently looking for that balance, and we’ll need to find it by Sunday.”
