Louie Barry in, 1 out: Sunderland AFC transfers we urge the club to make before February 3rd

It is crucial that Sunderland makes the proper choices during the upcoming January transfer window because the team has put itself in a strong position to challenge for promotion to the Premier League this season.

The Black Cats are presently fourth in the Championship standings ahead of back-to-back home games against Stoke City and Bristol City after making an impression in the first few months of the season under new manager Regis Le Bris.

This season, a number of young players have displayed maturity beyond their years, and it was especially clear in the first half of their close loss to Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Friday night that, even with their average squad age, Sunderland won’t be overwhelmed by any of the big names.

Le Bris will be frustrated that his side have failed to score in four of their last six games in the Championship, especially considering that a few more goals might have enabled Sunderland to still be inside the top two at this stage, so he may be considering ways in which he can add to his attacking options during the upcoming January transfer window.

Let’s take a look at two potential pieces of business that could improve Sunderland’s chances of success this season.

Louie Barry signs

Louie Barry

Sunderland may be in the market for a player who knows where the back of the net is, and Stockport County loanee Louie Barry is someone who fits that bill.

The 21-year-old has been on fire in League One so far this season, with it seemingly apparent that his ability in front of goal will make him capable of performing at a higher level.

According to reports, Sunderland should be among the teams interested in signing a short-term contract with Barry, since Aston Villa intends to recall him in January with the intention of loaning him back out to a Championship club for the second half of the season.

If Sunderland could get the attacker to the Stadium of Light, he may provide Le Bris with another left-wing option. Middlesbrough and Sheffield Wednesday have also been linked to a deal for the attacker.

Tom Watson, a teenager, has started on the left wing for Sunderland in each of their previous three games. Although he was very impressive against Sheffield United in the early half, Barry’s final product is now more polished.

Nazariy Rusyn leaves

It appears that Ukrainian forward Nazariy Rusyn has not impressed new manager Le Bris enough to warrant a league start, as he has only made six substitute appearances in the Championship this season.

Sunderland shouldn’t obstruct the 26-year-old’s desire to go, since he is unlikely to be happy with his lack of playing time thus far this season.

Since joining the Black Cats from Ukrainian team Zorya Luhansk in the summer of 2023, Rusyn has only managed to score twice. Although some fans might want to see him given another opportunity to establish himself, it wouldn’t be shocking if he left on loan or permanently during the next transfer window.
