Work to begin on city’s sporting quarter in 2025

Following the dismissal of a court challenge, a sporting development that had been delayed for years has been approved.

The Ashton Gate Sporting Quarter project by Bristol Sport, which would include a hotel and a new basketball arena

for the Bristol Flyers, is currently scheduled to begin construction in 2025.

The High Court has finally dismissed a legal dispute between a trash firm and council planners that had delayed the

development’s launch, and there is no longer any opportunity for an appeal.

The 5,000-seat multipurpose arena will be constructed adjacent to Ashton Gate Stadium, the home field of the

Bristol Bears rugby union club and Bristol City Football Club.

The sporting quarter’s plans were initially revealed in 2018, but they have been beset by legal disputes and delays.

An authorised proposal for 510 new houses at Longmoor was related to the development, but ETM Recycling filed a

judicial appeal in 2023 because of concerns that the noise from its nearby plant would disturb the locals.

During a High Court hearing, the Honourable Mr. Justice Lavender dismissed the appeal, ruling that there were no

exceptional circumstances that would grant ETM further time beyond the legal deadline to contest the Longmoor

Village planning permission.

Bristol Sport has confirmed that construction will start in 2025.
