Why Portsmouth are planning for Middlesbrough winger to stay beyond January transfer window despite disappointing loan

Sammy Silvera has been urged to regain the consistency that has been missing from his game as Pompey prepare for his season-long stay.

Despite falling down the first-team pecking order this season, John Mousinho has assured that the Australian will remain for the length of the campaign.

The Blues agreed to a season-long loan deal with Middlesbrough for the 24-year-old, with Silvera making five starts in 11 games.

The winger’s last start came against Sheffield United in September, and he has only been in 80 minutes of first-team action since then.

Silvera was left on the bench against Preston and was then withdrawn from the squad for the 2-2 draw with Swansea.

According to the News, the Socceroos international’s agreement includes a January recall mechanism for Middlesbrough, although Pompey cannot cut the arrangement short, as is common in many loan agreements.

Mousinho said that the Blues expect Silvera to stay into the new year, citing a desire to see the former Central Coast Mariners player deliver the potential he believes he possesses for extended periods.

When asked if Pompey will reassess Silvera’s position in January, Mousinho replied: ‘There is no review on that; we fully aim to keep all of the loans we presently have in the building for the rest of the season.

Sammy fits under that group. He’s been in and out of squads, but we anticipate him to contend for a spot on the squad and in the starting lineup as we move forward.

“That consistency is something we want to see from Sammy. ‘We’ve seen moments when he seemed like our most dangerous player, even without the goals and assists.

‘That is something for him to think about and work on, but with the way things are going with the press right now, it is something he needs to focus on.
