Steve Sidwell blew away ‘absolutely superb’ Aston Villa player during Brentford win

Aston Villa returned to winning ways in style after clinching a vital 3-1 victory over Brentford in the Premier League.

After losing in the Premier League, Champions League, and Carabao Cup, it was Unai Emery’s first victory in eight games.

With numerous players wearing claret and blue, the Spaniard will have been happy to see his Aston Villa team back to their dominant forms.

After Morgan Rogers’ incredible goal set the tone, Ollie Watkins and Matty Cash added a second and a third.

On a fantastic night at Villa Park, the goal scorers will receive the accolades, but another Aston Villa player and Boubacar Kamara, who was likened to Rodri, may merit greater recognition.

Against Brentford, Emery substituted Tyrone Mings for Pau Torres in the centre of the defensive.

Mings was outstanding in his first Premier League start of the season, outscoring his opponents in the air and making key crucial interceptions.

Alongside Ezri Konsa, the 31-year-old was a formidable presence in defence and set an example with his performance, making Villa appear much more stable.

Steve Sidwell, a former midfielder, was gushing about the Englishman, who they acquired for £25 million from Bournemouth in 2019, in a message sent to Emery on Wednesday night.

“The run that Aston Villa are in, this is exactly the performance and the character that they needed,” Sidwell stated in a post-match interview on Amazon Prime Video.

“We said about him [Mings] before the game with the leadership qualities he’s shown. He was absolutely superb tonight.”

It was always going to take Mings some time to catch up because he had been out of play for more than 14 months.

Mings was criticised for his strange handball during Villa’s 1-0 Champions League loss to Club Brugge, which was their first loss of the season.

The defender’s confidence would have been damaged, but Wednesday’s triumph showed that he was back to his best, as he made the second-most clearances (6) and won the most aerial duels (5) of any player.

For everyone associated with Aston Villa, it was magnificent to watch Mings perform at the highest level after being out for so long, and he deserves all the plaudits that come his way.
