Sheffield United might make an amazing acquisition in 2025, according to reports, as they hunt for a new fullback.
Sheffield United on course for promotion
With a third of the season completed, Chris Wilder’s Sheffield United team is on track for an instant return to the Premier League. The Blades lead the Championship by two points over Burnley and another point ahead of Leeds United, having conceded only nine goals this season.
Though promotion is not guaranteed, they appear to be in good form to compete by the end of the campaign.
And Wilder has pushed his players to embrace the promotion push, stating: “They see Sky Sports, they see it pop up on the right-hand side of the screen, they see they are winning games – we have to embrace that pressure.”
“Embrace the pressure of being a squad that has started the season well and deserves to be in our position. When we weren’t expecting to move forward in 2019, I advised we should embrace and appreciate our current situation. Would you rather be here or halfway up? “We’re 18 games in and approaching the midway point of the season. We’ve played three-quarters, if not more, of the teams, and we know where Plymouth, Cardiff, Burnley, and West Brom will play.
Alfie Gilchrist, a loanee who has started 15 games on the right side of defence, has played an important role in their progress. However, with no clarity about his future beyond this season, it appears that Sheffield United may be looking for an alternative defender.
Sheffield United want “elite” defender back at Bramall Lane
That comes as TalkSport reports that the Blades are interested in re-signing Kyle Walker this summer, which would boost their prospects of success if they can gain promotion. The defender began his career at Bramall Lane as a junior player before being immediately signed by Tottenham. He has since gone on to become a Premier League legend, winning six Premier League titles and a Champions League trophy with Manchester City.
Walker was termed “elite” at the start of the most recent season by fellow right-back and England colleague Reece James, who added: “His all-round quality as a player and person is at an elite level.” He has been at the top for many years and is an excellent professional.”

However, recent reports suggest that his time at the Etihad may be nearing to an end, and if he is allowed to leave, he will spark a bidding war for his signature, with Walker “expected to receive lucrative offers from Saudi Arabia and the MLS” as well as interest from his hometown.
Despite the substantial offers, the Blades are expected to have an advantage in the fight for the England international, as Walker has already expressed a desire to finish his career in Sheffield.
“I’d prefer to finish with Sheffield United. “That’s something I’d like to do,” he said on Rio Ferdinand’s podcast in March.
“I stayed there from such a young age till I got to Tottenham, and I only played five [league] games before going to Tottenham, after which I went back on loan for half a season. So I think I’ve got about 35 games left, and I’d like to play for as long as possible in order to give back or perhaps pass on my expertise to the younger guys who are coming up or who are already there. If I can accomplish it, I would like to, yes.”
Though he is no longer the standout player he once was, the 34-year-old might bring valuable experience to a team that set a Premier League record for the most goals surrendered in a single season last year.
