Middlesbrough: Ryan Giles’ Riverside return with Hull City may light fires for January move

Ryan Giles returned to Middlesbrough as a Hull City player on November 30, and his visit to the Riverside Stadium may have sparked interest in a January transfer.

The 24-year-old came off the Hull City bench in the second half to replace Cody Drameh, but his Tigers lost 3-1 to his previous side.

Giles was greeted warmly by Middlesbrough supporters upon his return, and they even reminded him that he may have made the wrong career decision by not staying at the club, having spent the entirety of the 2022/23 season on loan with Boro from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

During that campaign, the left-back had his best individual season of his senior career, with his precision left-footed crosses laying the groundwork for some fantastic goals and allowing him to become a real fan favourite among the Riverside crowd.

So, as the January window approaches, and his time at the MKM Stadium has not gone as planned, his return to the North East may have reignited his desire to put on the red and white shirt once more.

Hull City’s problems could open the way for Ryan Giles’ Middlesbrough homecoming.

There’s something about Giles and Middlesbrough that neither can seem to ignore, as if they’re two star-crossed lovers who know they’re meant to be together but can’t make it happen due to circumstances.

The pair may be in luck, as the winter window could present an opportunity for the Hull defender to leave the MKM Stadium and return to the Riverside.

It was believed in the summer that Middlesbrough were interested in reuniting with their former loan star, which Giles was also interested in, but that did not come to fruition. Since then, he’s battled to establish a starting position in Hull’s squad, and has had to settle for a supporting role this season.

For a player who has previously demonstrated his ability to make an impact at Championship level, that cannot be a role he is particularly excited about or eager to play.

For a player who has made no secret of how much he enjoyed his time with Middlesbrough during the 2022/23 season, and given the two clubs’ respective league standings so far this season, Boro will undoubtedly see Boro as an opportunity to join a team with a real shot at Premier League promotion this year and complete some unfinished business.
