He loves Rangers: Clement eyeing “solid” long term Tavernier replacement

He loves Rangers: Clement eyeing “solid” long term Tavernier replacement.

James Tavernier is having one of his worst seasons yet. The Rangers captain has been a standout performer in previous seasons, particularly last year when he scored 24 goals and gave 12 assists across all competitions.

This season, however, he has only two and five goals in 24 appearances, and his performances have also been heavily criticised.

Rangers News gave Tavernier a 2/10 rating for his performance in the 4-1 Europa League loss to Ligue 1 club Lyon in October. The 32-year-old has recently been linked with a move away from Ibrox, with clubs in Turkey allegedly interested.

Clement wants Kasanwirjo

Tavernier was substituted after an hour against Lyon by Neraysho Kasanwirjo, who is on loan at Ibrox from Eredivisie club Feyenoord this season.

The 22-year-old has also appeared on 11 other occasions this season, primarily as a substitute, but he is now expected to miss the remainder of the season due to injury. Kasanwirjo injured his knee while playing for the Netherlands Under-21s against England earlier this month. After surgery, he is unlikely to play again this season.

Rangers manager Philippe Clement continues to pursue a permanent transfer for the Dutchman, according to Mail Online.

According to the publication, Rangers envision Kasanwirjo as a long-term successor for Tavernier, who was displaced from the starting lineup several times before suffering an injury.

Rangers have the option to buy Kasanwirjo, valued at £1.5 million, at the end of the season.

Kasanwirjo “disappointed”

Following Rangers’ 1-0 Scottish Premiership triumph against St Johnstone, Clement discussed Kasanwirjo’s injury.

“Nana’s operation was successful, but he will be away for at least four to six months. So we can’t bank on him, and we’ll see how things go at the end of the season,” the Belgian manager stated.

Clement stated that Rangers has reached an arrangement with Feyenoord to have Kasanwirjo return to his home country for rehabilitation, but that he will not lose contact with the defender.

“I stay in touch with Nana, who was really disappointed not to continue the work he’s been doing, because he loves the club, he loves the dressing room, even loves the staff – that doesn’t happen so much,” said the player. “So we will see at the end of the season how it will be with him, but we cannot count on him in the next couple of months.”

Kasanwirjo has been praised as “solid” by BBC Sportscene analyst Marvin Bartley, who said of the former Groningen star: “He came into the team and did very well, he can definitely gallop and wants to play the ball forward when he can and he’s also technically very good.”
