EFL make official Sheffield Wednesday vs Preston North End decision ahead of Hillsborough clash

Sheffield Wednesday are back in Championship action this weekend with Preston North End the visitors to Hillsborough.

The officiating crew for Sheffield Wednesday’s Championship match at home to Preston North End this weekend has been announced, with Bobby Madley taking control of his first Owls game this season.

Wednesday are back in action on Saturday, hoping to move up the table with a third straight win. Danny Rohl’s team had not won consecutive games this season until last week, when they defeated Hull City and Derby County, with the latter requiring a 94th-minute Jamal Lowe effort to complete the comeback.

The Owls travel to Hillsborough and will be up against Preston, who have yet to win away from home this season. Paul Heckingbottom’s side has gone eight games without a win but has drew six of them, keeping them narrowly out of the relegation zone.
The EFL confirmed on Wednesday evening that Madley will play in the center at Hillsborough, his first game of the season on Wednesday. Preston’s opening-day 2-0 defeat against Sheffield United and a Carabao Cup penalty shootout victory against Fulham have both been officiated by the seasoned referee.

Madley is one of the more lenient Championship referees, calling an average of 21.18 fouls per game, the third-lowest among everyone who has officiated ten or more games. He has also averaged just 3.18 yellow cards per match, with just David Webb averaging fewer with ten games under his belt.

He will be aided by Blake Antrobus and Darren Williams, with Adam Herczeg serving as the fourth official between the two dugouts. Wednesday will seek to give Madley a peaceful game and avoid any controversy, with a genuine chance to establish themselves as contenders for a top half finish.

Victory could propel the Owls up to seventh place if Bristol City, Millwall, and Norwich City all lose. A third consecutive win would allow Rohl’s side to start looking up at the play-off outsiders, rather than over their shoulder at a nasty relegation battle.

Rohl will be hoping to get Ike Ugbo back after he missed last weekend’s 2-1 triumph at Pride Park, and Dominic Iorfa will be able to recuperate swiftly from a knock sustained during that game. Di’Shon Bernard will also return to the team after completing a one-game suspension.

Preston are four places and three points above the relegation zone, but a win at Hillsborough could propel them up to 16th. Robbie Brady and Liam Lindsay are anticipated to miss out, and Mads Frokjaer’s status remains uncertain. Goalkeeper Freddie Woodman will be available after serving his own ban.
