Carlos Corberan’s West Brom backed to sign Leeds United outcast in January transfer raid

It is fair to say Joe Gelhardt faces an uncertain Leeds United future

You might forgive Joe Gelhardt for becoming disgruntled with his lack of playing time for Leeds United this season. Since starting the Carabao Cup home loss to Middlesbrough, the dynamic forward has only appeared as a Championship substitute twice.

In attack, competition is fierce, and Gelhardt was sidelined for a short period of time last month due to a minor injury. The 22-year-old was last featured in a matchday squad on October 26, when the Whites drew 0-0 at Bristol City.
West Bromwich Albion, the Whites’ promotion opponents, are said to be looking to add another attacker in the New Year to strengthen their chances of finishing in the top six. The Baggies, led by former Whites coach Carlos Corberan, have dropped out of the play-offs following a string of bad defeats. Corberan’s side is now eight points behind Burnley, who presently hold the second automatic promotion position.

Don Goodman, a Sky Sports commentator, feels the Baggies should attempt to sign Gelhardt on loan to boost their offensive options. “I would say there’s nothing to lose by going down that route [Gelhardt], really,” Goodman told West Brom. “Very different type than [Josh] Maja. It’s simple to visualize them playing as part of a team rather than one on one.

“He is another one. He’s similar to Maja in that he wants to restart his career after his time at Leeds United didn’t go as planned. I know he had a brief loan period at Sunderland, when he showed glimpses of his potential. But he’s simply another player who needs to reset and start over.

“So, to be honest, I think it would be a win-win situation for everyone if he left Leeds and went on loan to West Brom. So, yes, it makes logical sense.
