Amazon Prime make blunder before first Premier League match and quickly apologise

After mistakenly stating that long-retired Stoke City star Rory Delap was lining up for Ipswich Town on Tuesday night, Amazon Prime broadcaster Guy Mowbray issued an apology. The streaming service is authorized to broadcast this week’s Premier League games, but before the Tractor Boys’ matchup with Crystal Palace, spectators were left perplexed.

Before the game, Mowbray was explaining the Ipswich lineup to the supporters. The seasoned analyst disclosed that Delap, a former midfielder, would be playing up front for the home team.

Naturally, he was referring to Liam, the son of the long-throw expert, who has been playing well for Ipswich this season. Soon after, Mowbray made a joke about his error. He was “showing my age” by mixing Delap Snr with Delap Jnr, the 52-year-old joked.

In the summer transfer window, Liam left Manchester City for Ipswich. Even though his team is currently second from bottom in the Premier League, he has scored an incredible six goals in his first full season.

The 21-year-old joined City’s academy from Derby in 2019 and cost £20 million. Delap had enjoyed loan stints at Stoke, Preston, and Hull but had struggled to break into City’s all-star senior group.

Delap unable to stop Ipswich from losing to Palace 1-0, despite his strong play this season. The Eagles were able to escape the relegation zone thanks to Jean-Philippe Mateta’s outstanding second-half finish. They had only won twice during the campaign.
