As Porto fought for a winner, Nanu was involved in a horrifying accident with the Belenenses custodian in the final seconds.
Former Real Madrid star Pepe was left in tears after a horrific incident overshadowed Porto’s 0-0 draw away at
Belenenses.
When right-back Nanu pushed for a loose ball in the box in the final seconds, the visitors were vying for a victory.
However, he was promptly rendered unconscious after a terrible collision with Belenenses custodian Stanislav
Kritsyuk, who was charging at him.
He remained still on the pitch while players frantically called for assistance, necessitating the arrival of an
ambulance to transport him to the hospital.
Porto subsequently tweeted, “Nanu suffered a spinal cord injury and a cerebral concussion, resulting in a loss of
memory.”
“He is stable, conscious, and cognisant of time and his surroundings at this moment.”
Nanu, 26, was making his eighth league appearance of what has been a breakthrough season for the Portuguese
giants.
After moving from Maritimo to the club last year, the former Benfica youth prospect has begun to establish himself
in Sergio Conceicao’s starting lineup.
Their tie was yet another setback to the reigning champions’ aspirations of winning the championship, as they have
been unable to stay up with Sporting Lisbon at the top of the standings.
Even though Nanu’s injury overshadowed the outcome, Porto is now three points behind Sporting, who still have a
game to play.
Before getting ready for their Champions League last-16 matchup with Juventus later this month, they play their first
game back on Sunday against third-place Braga.
