Keith Hackett reacts to VAR incidents after Nottingham Forest defeat Ipswich

Nottingham Forest were correctly awarded one penalty and denied another in their 1-0 win over Ipswich Town, Keith Hackett has said.

The former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA referee spoke exclusively to Football Insider about the two events from the November 30 clash.
Chris Wood maintained his superb form, which has earned him many admirers this season, to secure a 1-0 win from the penalty spot for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side.

Shortly later, however, the Nottingham Forest striker was denied another penalty kick as Tony Harrington waved down his appeals.

Hackett has now spoken out on both situations, supporting the umpires’ conclusions.

Chris Wood correctly denied second Nottingham Forest penalty

After a goalless first half, the hosts seized the lead at The City Ground four minutes later when Wood converted a penalty.
That came when Sammie Szmodics caught Jota Silva’s leg and brought him down inside the Ipswich area while stretching to win the ball.

Nottingham Forest were subsequently denied another penalty after Wood went down under a challenge from Jens Cajuste, despite replays indicating the Napoli loanee made obvious touch with the ball.

Speaking on the decision to grant the hosts one penalty and rule out another, Hackett told Football Insider: “It was the correct award of a penalty kick to Nottingham Forest following a clear trip inside the penalty area.” Referee Harrington made the proper choice, as Chris Wood shoots it into the net to score it 1-0.

“A VAR check was conducted for another possible foul on Woods, as well as another penalty kick appeal. However, following the video review, no second penalty was issued. “Another correct decision.”

That win continued Nottingham Forest’s outstanding start to the season, as they sat sixth in the table, just one point behind the Champions League positions.

By comparison, Ipswich are second-from-bottom in the Premier League, which might put them under pressure in the January transfer window if interest in their best players does not improve shortly.
