Joe Savage reveals he was ‘absolutely battered’ over Lawrence Shankland to Rangers transfer jibe
Former Hearts sporting director Joe Savage was “absolutely battered” after stating Rangers couldn’t afford Lawrence Shankland during a trade deadline day interview.
The former Jambos recruitment guru made the comment in February 2023, amid speculation that the Light Blues may make a move. Savage was on BBC Radio Scotland’s special transfer deadline day show, and when he returned to the station’s Off The Ball show, he remarked, “I got battered for it. When I stated that the Rangers couldn’t afford Lawrence Shankland, I received harsh criticism.
“But it was the last day of the window, and nobody was signing Shanks because we weren’t selling him. There was no approach. There is no conversation whatsoever. Rangers never approached Hearts about signing Lawrence Shankland.”
Shankland missed a penalty in Hearts’ midweek Europa Conference League loss to Cercle Brugge, prompting some away fans to yell at him to “get to f***”. When asked by show host Tam Cowan if he wants to join boyhood heroes Rangers, Savage replied, “Potentially.”
“But Shanks is not like that. He’s committed to his cause and simply wants to score goals. He requires assistance from others. He’s just been unlucky with some of his opportunities.”
Shankland was at his scorching best when he was popular with the Rangers, and Savage stated at the time, “They wouldn’t be able to afford him! I can tell you this right now. Not a chance. There is no price; he is not for sale. Shanks isn’t going anywhere. Shanks will score 30-odd goals for us this season and become a genuine Hearts icon, that’s the idea!”
